CASE STUDY: How to Use Twitter Contests to Drive Traffic

This week, we conducted an informal Case Study to see how Twitter (specifically a Tweet Contest) might drive traffic to two different Virtual Book Tour squeeze pages in a 24-hour period. The results were amazing:

What is a Tweet Contest?

Well, there are many types. In most cases, there is a “give away” to the winner. I proposed the idea of a Twitter Contest to Maritza and Noah using this simple explanation. Both Maritza and Noah were excited to participate and agreed to give away an autographed copy of their respective books to the winners.

This is how we did it.  First, we posted contest instructions on a blog like this:

Then, I went ahead and entered the contest myself.  I sat back and watched the incredible stream on Twitter responses! Truly inspiring!

And, the fun continues.  Maritza plans to give her winner more than an autographed book. She’s throwing in lots of bonus videos and cool gifts. Thank you!

In Noah’s case, his contest goes through February 26. So, you still have time to join in the fun and Tweet to win!

Great post! Twitter is easily the most viral site on the net right now.

I turned this concept into a business. Check it out at http://followtowin.com

Great case study, Phil! I’m going to blog about it at “my Your Book Publishing Coach” blog. I saw the promos for the VBTs and attended Noah’s (and bought the book). I do VBTs for publishers, will suggest this to them.

Hey Phil,

Interesting reading and looking forward to following your twitter promotions.

Most the twitter follow/retweet contests I’ve been observing are targeting increased twitter followers and meeting with varying degrees of success. What is interesting about your promotions is how they are successfully driving traffic to your squeeze page. Excellent!

Good luck with the promotions and always feel free to tweet me @TWinners when you roll out a new one.

Hi Phil,
Such a creative idea. I am in the middle of an Amazon book launch right now (coming on 7 April in fact!) and so far we have done a JV bonus page and a virtual blog tour. This contest idea gives a whole different spin. So much fun. How did Maritza choose the winner? Did she track the RT’s or did she just pull the name out of the proverbial hat?

Warm wishes,
Lynn Serafinn

Hi Lynne,

Great questions. I helped Maritza (and Noah) set up their Twitter contests. I was the one to select the winners based on the RT’s. Then, I made a random selection of all RT’s. I used http://retweetist.com to track RT’s, then verified by doing a search with http://TweetDeck.com and http://search.twitter.com.

Good luck with your April 7 book launch. I would also suggest you let people know on #TT6 (http://TwitterTuesday.com), #VBT (http://VirtualBookTourPro.com) and #FollowFriday.
